My Story
Karl Smith is a dedicated education professional with a lifelong commitment to advancing opportunities for underprivileged and underrepresented students. Throughout his career, Karl has held leadership roles at various institutions, each contributing to his extensive experience and profound impact on the academic landscape.
Karl began his journey in higher education as a holistic admissions application reader in the Office of Admissions at the University of Washington. His early career coincided with a significant moment in the state's history, marked by the passage of an initiative outlawing the use of race in college admissions. Undeterred by this challenge, Karl used this experience as a stepping stone to make a meaningful difference.
Moving to the University of Washington Office of Minority Affairs, Karl focused on implementing strategies to increase applications from underrepresented minority students, elevate acceptance rates, and improve yield rates. His dedication and innovative approaches led to his promotion to Director of Outreach and Recruitment, where he continued cultivating innovation strategies to increase the number of BIPOC students.
Karl's impact extended beyond the Office of Minority Affairs when he assumed the Associate Director of Recruitment role in the University of Washington Office of Admissions. In this capacity, he developed and implemented strategies aligned with the institution's state, national, and international new student enrollment targets. His leadership played a crucial role in shaping the university's student body.
Continuing his upward trajectory, Karl became the Associate Vice Chancellor at the University of Washington Tacoma (UWT), an Urban serving institution. In this position, he oversaw multiple critical departments, including the Office of Admission, Registrar, Financial Aid, Career Center, Veterans Services, and the Office for First Generation Students. At UWT, Karl orchestrated a series of transformative initiatives. He revamped the college's admissions and scholarship processes and enhanced career services. He supported launching pivotal programs like emergency financial aid, the College Housing Assistance Program, and the First-Generation Fellow program. These efforts showed his commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive environment. At UWT, Karl participated in a national project called the Emergency Aid Lab, sponsored by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. This project, aimed at addressing the urgent financial needs of students, showcased Karl's commitment to innovative solutions in higher education.
Karl's current role as the Vice President of Student Affairs at Tacoma Community College (TCC) demonstrates his unwavering dedication to the welfare of students. At TCC, he provides leadership across all traditional student affairs functions related to enrollment and retention. Additionally, he has overseen the college's childcare center, which remains one of the few in the state of Washington. His vision and leadership were instrumental in restructuring the college's diversity resource center into the Office of Student Advocacy and Cultural Support. This office is focused on empowering BIPOC, under-resourced, and underserved populations. At TCC, he has championed using Data Analytics to support student retention efforts, utilizing data-informed approaches to provide an equity framework. His pioneering work in this area and Guided Pathways reform is changing how TCC serves its students.
Karl Smith's illustrious career exemplifies the impact that a dedicated individual can make in higher education. His unwavering commitment to under-resourced and underrepresented student populations has left an indelible mark on the institutions he has served, demonstrating the power of education as a tool for positive change. Through his professional experiences, Karl has gained the wisdom and expertise needed to guide institutions toward transformation into "student-ready" institutions, fostering a more inclusive, equitable, and supportive environment for all.
